PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

 

This year is the 73^rd year for Shipmates, the women’s auxiliary for Tacoma Yacht Club. Through the years we have accomplished many things for Tacoma Yacht Club and the Tacoma community. We are a group of women whose friendship and camaraderie make our group extraordinary. 

 

Each month on the first Wednesday we have a luncheon that includes social time, lunch, a program, and a business meeting. On the third Wednesday we have a board meeting that all members are encouraged to attend followed by lunch in the dining room.

 

Through the years we have had fund raisers to support our gifts to the club and to the surrounding community charities.  Each year we sell Daffodil apparel to support our $500 Miss Congeniality Scholarship and our gift of  Daffodil apparel to each princess.   Every third year we hold an auction that supports all of our monetary gifts to the community.  In the past year the following groups received a contribution:  TYC Junior Sailing Program, Breast Cancer Resource Center, the Sea Scouts ship, the Odyssey, the Sea Scouts’ ship, The Curtis, and the Foss Waterway Seaport Museum.  In the years between auctions we hold Tour of Boats where around 12 members volunteer to show off their boats to members and their friends.  This past year this event included antique boats and classic cars.  In recent years we have donated an AED Defibrillator, round tables, a cruise trailer, and artificial ficus trees to our club.

 

The Shipmates are a group of hard working, talented women.  Each year  at Christmas we buy, wrap, and deliver gifts to Tacoma Needy Families. We run the Children’s Christmas Party at TYC.  During the Daffodil weekend we help with many different committees.  In the spring we organize the Bunny Brunch for TYC children, grandchildren and friends.

 

Please consider joining Shipmates even if you work full time.  We have events on weekends that need help.  It’s a great way to make new friends.
